Firstly, Soul Sister Maggie and myself would like to thank everyone who attended our first Herts & Soul/U3A Midsummer’s Night Hopper last Saturday. Our Umbrella Big Band pals (featuring vocalist Michael Savage) were on sparkling form on a most lively, fun-filled evening of dance, which raised just short of £500 for our Soulster Hamper Project.
We owe a great debt of thanks to the dynamic duo of Soul Brother Peter Clayton and Soul Sister Lucy Gray whose infectious enthusiasm and can-do attitude made the preparation around the event so easy at Herts and Essex High School. Thanks also to Zoe and Rog Bennett for helping to dress the venue.
I bring news of our second ensemble piece for this Friday’s rehearsal – ‘Papa Can You Hear Me?’. There will also be a new song for you to print and bring with you on Friday, ‘Top of the World’ which was a no 1 hit in 1973 by the US brother/sister duo, Richard and Karen Carpenter.
Congratulations to David J and Betty U – our ‘Unforgettable’ soloists.

High Sheriff’s Invitation Concert, Haileybury College Sept 28th
We have been invited by Sarah Beazley, the High Sheriff of Herts to represent Bishop’s Stortford and the East Herts area in a special concert to celebrate the importance of Community Choirs in Hertfordshire and their diversity. There will be a dozen or so choirs from throughout the county taking part. Each choir will sing two songs of their own choice, with all choirs joining together to perform an additional 4 songs chosen by Andrew O’Brien, Director of Music at Haileybury College.
The Concert will be taking place at the College on the evening of Saturday 28th September with rehearsals taking place from 1 – 5 pm on the same day.
Our communal songs are the Hallelujah Chorus from the Messiah, Do You Hear The People Sing from Les Miserables, You Raise Me Up plus one other song still to be decided.
We managed to persuade the organisers that we should be allowed to take 50 Soulsters to perform at the concert (each choir was originally offered 15-20 places) which means we need to collect names of those who would like to perform in the concert asap please – places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis, but we will also need to achieve a blend and balance of vocal parts. We will do our very best to make sure everybody is accommodated on what promises to be another special occasion in Soulsterville.
